Save, export & recover your work

Understand board files, saved copies, PNG exports and autosave recovery.

On this page

Save a board

Use File > Save As to save to another name or location. Keep separate copies when you need a history of milestones.

  1. Choose File > Save or press Ctrl+S.
  2. For a new, imported or directly opened recovery board, choose an .inref filename and destination.
  3. For an existing .inref board, Save updates its current file. Check the status message if a save cannot finish.

Export an image

File > Export uses your current selection to decide what to export. Save the board separately if you want to keep editing it.

  • Only images selected: export each available image as a PNG at source resolution. Multiple images are written to a chosen folder.
  • Other board content selected: render the selection together as one PNG.
  • Nothing selected: export an image of the complete board.

Set up autosave

Autosave keeps recovery copies of local boards, including untitled boards, in your user data folder after you pause editing. It does not replace Save or Save As, which update your chosen board file.

  1. Open Edit > Preferences and select Save.
  2. Turn on Enable autosave and choose the delay after edits.
  3. Choose how many recovery copies to retain. More copies need more disk space.

Recover after an interruption

Recovery depends on a usable snapshot being available. Keep independent backups of important board and project files.

  1. For a board you had already saved, reopen its .inref file and review any recovery prompt.
  2. For an untitled board, choose File > Recover Autosaves to review available recovery snapshots.
  3. Inspect the restored content and save it. Use Save As if you want to retain the existing board file as a separate copy.

Check a damaged package

Keep a copy of the original before using File > Validate Package or File > Repair Package. Repair writes a new package and may not recover every item.
