Supported files & import methods

Choose the right import route for images, videos, audio, models and existing boards.

On this page

Choose an import method

  • Images: drag files onto the board or paste an image from the clipboard.
  • Video: use Add > Video and choose the appropriate link or file option.
  • Audio: choose Add > Audio.
  • 3D models: choose Add > Mesh.
  • Existing InRef boards: use File > Open, or File > Append Board to add board content to the current board.

Images & Photoshop documents

Board image imports accept PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIF/TIFF and TGA/TARGA. PSD and PSB use the Photoshop import workflow.

  • Photoshop support is partial: supported layers and effects may differ from the original application.
  • Inref includes image-pixel and layer editing. The image-editing limit is 36 megapixels.
  • A file extension alone does not guarantee that an unusually large, damaged or unsupported variant can be decoded.

Video & audio

Video file imports accept MP4, M4V, WebM, MOV, WMV, AVI, MKV, MPEG and MPG. Audio file imports accept WAV, MP3, WMA, M4A, AAC and FLAC.

  • Playback also depends on the codecs and playback support available on the computer.
  • Online video links depend on their provider, availability and a network connection.
  • An online embed is not an offline copy of the source video.

3D models

Mesh imports accept OBJ, STL, 3DS, LWO, OFF and FBX. Model, material and skeleton support varies by file.

  • Keep associated material and texture files available when importing.
  • A Blender .blend scene is not a supported mesh-import format. Export a supported model file or use the separate Blender bridge for its reference workflow.
  • InRef provides model inspection and supported posing tools; it is not a full modelling or animation editor.

Boards & folders

Native boards use .inref. Use File > Open to open an InRef board, or File > Append Board to bring its content into the current board. Save your work as an .inref file.

  • Add > Folder offers append, pack and live-link workflows.
  • Live linked folders accept the standard image formats listed above; PSD and PSB use their separate import workflow.
  • Live linking requires access to the source folder.
